This is Singapore’s first ice house belonged to Hoo Ah Kay (1815-80), a prominent businessman and public figure in Singapore. Whampoa Ice House was built in 1854, to meet the demand for ice as refrigeration did not exist at that time. This Whampoa Ice House is located near the Coleman Bridge at Clarke Quay.
